Pompeii, The Thermopoly of the Regio V
Pompeii will never cease to amaze us, the thermopoly of the Regio V resurfaces in its entirety. Among still life scenes, food remains, animal bones and victims of the eruption.
The thermopoly of Regio V, one of the hot tables of Pompeii, with the image of the Nereid on horseback (already partially excavated in 2019), resurfaces in its entirety with other rich decorations of still lifes, finds of food remains, animal bones and victims of the eruption.
The commercial plant was only partially investigated in 2019. That is, during the interventions of the Great Pompeii Project for the safety and consolidation of the historical excavation fronts.
Considering the exceptional nature of the decorations and in order to restore the complete configuration of the room, located in the clearing at the intersection between the vicolo delle Nozze d’Argento and the vicolo dei Balconi, it was decided to extend the project and to complete the excavation of the whole environment.
In front of the thermopoly, in the small square in front, a cistern, a fountain, and a piezometric tower (for water distribution) had already emerged, located a short distance from the shop already known for the fresco of gladiators in combat.
The decorations on the counter, the first to emerge from the excavation, show on the front the image of a Nereid on horseback in a marine environment. And on the shorter side the illustration, probably of the shop itself as a commercial sign. The discovery, at the time of excavation, of amphorae placed in front of the counter reflected the painted image not by chance.

In this new phase of excavation, on the last arm of the counter unearthed other valuable still life scenes emerged, with representations of animals, probably slaughtered and sold in the room. Bone fragments, pertaining to the animals themselves, were also found inside containers made in the thickness of the counter containing food intended for sale. Like the two mallard ducks exposed upside down, ready to be prepared and eaten, a rooster and a dog on a leash, almost a warning in the manner of the famous Cave Canem.
A mocking graffiti inscription “Nicia cineade cacator” can be read on the frame that encloses the painting of the dog: Nicias (probably a freedman from Greece) Cacatore, inverted! Probably left by a joker who wanted to make fun of the owner or someone who worked in the thermopoly.
Amphorae and flasks
In addition, various pantry and transport materials were found in the thermopoly: nine amphorae, a bronze patera, two flasks, a common table ceramic olla. The floor of the whole room is made up of a layer of cocciopesto (waterproof coating composed of terracotta fragments), in which fragments of polychrome marble (alabaster, portasanta, green breccia and bardiglio) have been inserted in some places.
Thermopolis, where drinks and hot food were served, as the name of Greek origin indicates, preserved in large dolia (jars) embedded in the masonry counter. Were very popular in the Roman world, where it was customary to consume prandium (the meal) outside home. In Pompeii alone there are about eighty.
