Brief history of ancient Pompeii.

The city of Pompeii stands on a plateau at about 30 m. above sea level, formed by a Vesuvian lava flow, to control the valley of the Sarno river at whose mouth there was an active port. Uncertain are the news on the origins of the city.

The most ancient testimonies date from the end of the VII and the first half of the VI century. a.C., when the first tuff wall called “pappamonte” was built, which delimited an area of 63.5 ha.

A “mixed” civilization, in which indigenous, Etruscan and Greek elements were fused, led to the development of the city and the construction of a fortified limestone wall according to the Greek system (5th century BC).

Towards the end of the fifth century. BC, the tribes of the Samnites, descended from the mountains of Irpinia and Sannio, spread in the plain of today’s Campania (which means “fertile plain”), conquering and inserting the Vesuvian and coastal cities in a league with the capital of Nuceria (Nocera) .

In the Samnite era Pompeii received a strong impulse to urbanization: it dates back to the 4th century. B.C. the construction of a new limestone fortification of Sarno, which was to follow a path similar to the previous one.

Towards the end of the fourth century. BC, the movements of the Samnite populations disturbed the political structure, forcing Rome to intervene in southern Italy: systems of alliances and victorious military campaigns will make it a hegemon throughout Campania (343-290 BC).

Pompeii then entered as an ally in the political organization of the Roman res publica, which, however, in 90-89 BC. he rebelled together with other Italic populations, who demanded equal socio-political dignity in Rome.

Under siege by Lucius Cornelius Sulla’s troops, the city capitulated and became a Roman colony with the name of Cornelia Veneria Pompeianorum (80 BC).

After the deduction of the colony, Pompeii was enriched with private and public buildings, and further embellished especially in the age of the emperors Octavian Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD) and Tiberius (14-37 AD).

The earthquake and eruption – Pompeii Ruins

In 62 AD a violent earthquake struck the entire Vesuvian area. In Pompeii the reconstruction began immediately, but, due to the extent of the damage and the seismic swarm that followed, it took a long time.

When 17 years later, on 24 August 79 AD (from some recent studies it is thought that the eruption probably occurred on October 24 of that year), the sudden eruption of Vesuvius buried her with ashes and lapilli, Pompeii appeared as a still open construction site.

Its rediscovery occurred at the end in the sixteenth century, but only in 1748 did exploration begin, with the king of Naples Charles III of Bourbon, and continued systematically in the nineteenth century, until the most recent excavation, restoration and enhancement of the city and of its exceptional heritage of architecture, sculptures, paintings, mosaics.

The archaeological area of Pompeii extends for about 66 hectares of which about 45 have been excavated.

The division of the city into regiones (districts) and insulae (blocks) was made by Giuseppe Fiorelli in 1858, for study and orientation needs. The names of the houses, when the owner is not known, were coined by the excavators on the basis of particular finds or other circumstances.
